They will have more energy and a reduced risk of medical conditions associated with obesity such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis
Not sure if your pet is overweight?
It can be difficult to tell whether your pet is overweight. Research has shown that people frequently underestimate their pets weight with many assuming that overweight dogs are the correct weight and that seriously obese dogs are only slightly overweight. Speak to your vet, they are experts in this and will able to tell if they do need to lose some weight and give you valuable help to achieve this.
Body condition scoring is a tool that vets use to measure ideal weight. You can do this at home with these BCS guides.
With the palms of your hand lightly stroke across their rib cage on either side – can you feel their ribs?
Look at them from the above and from the side. Which of the pictures best resembles your pet – can you see a waist? If your pet has a thick coat you may need to feel for the waist rather than just look.
